Accessibility
We want everyone on a team to be able to read the schedule and change their shifts, on any device. We aim for WCAG 2.2 level AA.
What we do
- Every page and app screen works with a keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline. The app's calendar has shortcuts too: T for today, [ and ] for earlier and later, 1, 2 and 3 for day, week and month, arrow keys across the month, and ? for the list.
- The app comes in four looks: Neutral, Dark, High contrast and Warm. It follows your device's light or dark setting until you pick one, there's a switch on the sign-in page, and it respects your system's forced colors.
- Pages use real headings, labeled form fields and buttons, and a "Skip to content" link.
- Text and buttons meet contrast guidelines on our colors. Status is never shown by color alone: shifts that are short say so in words ("Needs Manager on duty").
- Rule checks are written as plain sentences that name the people and the rule, and are announced to screen readers when they appear.
- Pages zoom to 200% and work at phone width without sideways scrolling. Main buttons on phones are at least 44 pixels tall.
- Moving parts (the drifting schedule bars on the home page) stop if your device asks for reduced motion.
- The site and the app are in English and Spanish. In the app each person picks their language, and the page language is set so screen readers pronounce it correctly.
What isn't right yet
- The week grid in the schedule maker and the people view in the app are wide tables. On a phone they scroll sideways inside their box; the schedule maker also shows a day-by-day list instead.
- The demo is easier to follow with a screen reader through its suggested steps than by moving around the schedule.
